Peta COrnwall doctor
Dr Peta Cornwall
Peta has been at South Side Medical since its opening in 2007. She has a drive and enthusiasm for all aspects of family medicine.

She is committed to educating medical students from James Cook University and will often have them assisting her during consultations.

She also mentors GP Registrars in rural and remote locations and is an examiner for JCU, RACGP, ACCRM and RVTS. Peta is also a GP Supervisor for Generalist Medical Training.

Dr Peter Gaden
Peter joined us in July 2015 after serving several years in the Royal Australian Navy.

He is accredited to perform recreational and commercial dive medicals and is a member of SPUMS.

 Peter loves family medicine and has a particular interest in paediatrics and children with special needs.
Peter has a special interest in detecting and treating skin cancers.

Peter is also a supervisor for James Cook University Medical students.
Dr Stephen Lambert

Stephen is a GP registrar working part time in medical education in addition to clinical practice. His passion is about maintaining health and preventing disease. He has an interest in lifestyle management and its effect on mental health, weight management and child development.  Stephen is available for appointments on Monday, Wednesday,Thursday and Friday.

Stephen has recently been appointed the position of Director of Medical Training at Mackay Health Service

Dr Rick Freudenstein

Rick has over 30 years experience in general practice in the UK.  His interests and experience are many and varied including asthma, women's and men's health, children's medicine, orthopaedic medicine, diabetes, minor surgery and skin checks. 

His cheeky smile and sense of humour help  put his patients at ease.

Rick also speaks fluent German.

Dr Hilary Thomson

Dr Hilary Thomson joined the practice in 2017 as a GP Registrar.

Hilary is a strong supporter of preventative medicine, health promotion and public health.

She is very keen to work in the community and assist the residents of Mackay with their health needs.

Elissa specialises in all aspects of Women’s
and Sexual Health including:
  • Mirena contraceptive insertion and removal.
  • Implanon insertion and removal.
  • Pap smears and breast examinations.
  • Depo injections.
  • Contraception, infertility and family planning counselling.
  • Menopause treatment and counselling.
  • STI screening and counselling.
Elissa runs private women’s health clinics weekly at South Side Medical.
Dr Ciara Ross

Ciara is a born and bred Mackay local.  She has been a GP for 7 years servicing the Mackay region.  Ciara has a special interest in child health and has completed a Diploma through Sydney University/Westmead Children's Hospital. She is a Natural Family Planning Medical consultant and was trained through Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska.  Ciara offers NAPRO (Natural Procreative) Technology which is an alternative to using contraceptive medications and artificial reproductive technologies in the treatment of women's health issues and infertility. 

She is also a GP Academic for James Cook University (since 2014) and helps deliver teaching for the year 5 general practice program.  Ciara is the Lead Medical Educator in Mackay for Generalist Medical Training who delivers GP Registrar training throughout Queensland.

Dr Cassie Wedgwood

Cassie joined South Side Medical in 2017 as a GP Registrar.  She takes a holistic approach to her practice and emphasises the importance of an active lifestyle and healthy choices.

Her interests include women and children's health, antenatal care, and skin cancer medicine.

Doctor Elissa Hatherly
Mr Garry Batt (Counsellor/CMHN) BA, MHN, RN, MACMHN, MDANA
Garry works under the Mental Health Nurses in Practice program which enables our patients to receive counselling at a reduced fee.

Garry is available in the practice and also has many after-hours sessions available.

Garry has many years of experience in mental health nursing and in particular dual diagnosis involving drugs and alcohol.

Kath is a Registered Nurse with a vision of delivering high quality, effective healthcare. She is the sole owner and Practice Manager of South Side Medical.

Kath comes from a firm customer service background and is passionate about ensuring patients have the best experience possible when visiting the practice.

Kath is actively involved in other areas of health which enhances her management of the practice. She works closely with the North Queensland Primary Health Network and Mackay Base Hospital in developing improvements to the patient journey from general practice through to the public health system and home again.

Kath was the regional winner for the Australian Institute of Management Owner/Manager Award in 2009.


 Renae, Alyce, Riley, Tali and Hayley are our delightful “Directors of First Impressions”.

They are the friendly voices on the end of the phone and love being able to assist with all of your needs.

They endeavour to please as many people as possible and come up with solutions to any problems. They are the heart and soul of our general practice.


The doctors are assisted by our two wonderful nurses, Michelle and Richard. 

Michelle has over 30 years of experience in nursing in the community, hospital and general practice. She is an expert on childhood immunisations and chronic disease management. 

Richard has been with us since graduating from Central Queensland University. He is currently studying to become a paramedic and is actively involved in assisting other general practice nurses within Mackay. Richard is involved in chronic disease management and all aspects of general practice nursing.
